Replacing the major toilet parts is easily accomplished as follows:


If you hear sounds of dripping water when you are near the toilet, it is usually because the flush valve, sometimes referred to as flapper valve, is leaking allowing water to leave the tank. When the tank water gets to a certain level, the fill valve will open, allowing water to re-enter the tank. You may have heard the tank refilling after hearing the dripping sound. With these signs, you can be certain the flush valve needs replacing. Replacing the valve is very easy if you follow the directions I am going to give you below. Don’t be concerned about your hands being in the remaining water in the tank. It is completely fresh water.

How To Replace Toilet Flush Valve

 
 1. Remove the toilet tank lid
 2. Turn off water

Turn off the water supply valve located at the wall below the left side of the toilet tank.  Turn the valve completely clockwise.  Now hold down the flush lever until most of the water leaves the tank.
 

 3. Disconnection chain from flush handle lever

Remove the chain that connects between the flush handle lever and the flush valve. The chain is usually attached with a clip to the flush lever.  Open the clip and remove the chain.
 

4. Remove flush valve from bottom of  tank

Reach your hand down to the  valve and remove the two attaching ears holding the valve to the overflow tube.  Remove the valve from the tank.
 

 5. Clean surface of valve seat.

With a rag, clean the ring seat where the flush valve was located.
 

 6. Install the new valve

Install the new valve by attaching the two ears to the two retaining tabs.
 

 7. Attach the chain

Attach the chain clip to the flush lever leaving a little slack in the chain.
 

 8. Turn on water

After the tank fills, flush the toilet. Did the valve open completely during the flush and close after the flush?  If not, readjust the chain length at the flush handle lever.
 

 9. Replace tank lid

 

How To Replace Toilet Fill Valve

 

If you notice that you can still hear water running in the toilet tank after having replaced the flapper valve, the water fill valve either needs adjusting or replacing.  Try adjusting the valve with the adjusting device on the valve assembly.    If you still have a problem after the adjustment, you will have to replace the valve. There are various types of fill valves.  The removal and installation procedure is the same for all types .
 

1. Remove tank lid

 
2. Turn off water supply

Turn off the water supply valve located at the wall below the left side of the toilet tank. Turn the valve completely clockwise.  Now hold down the flush lever until most of the water leaves the tank.
 

3. Remove the water supply line from the fill valve shaft

Prior to removing the supply line, place a container under the toilet tank to catch any water remaining in the tank. Next, unscrew the hex nut on the supply line where attached at the bottom of the tank.
 

4. Loosen and remove fill valve shaft nut

The shaft nut is located on the bottom exterior of the tank at the water supply line.
 

5. Lift out valve

Grasp the valve at the inside of the tank and lift out.
 

6. Install new fill valve

Make sure the rubber seal is on the bottom of the valve shaft.  Insert the fill valve in the opening in the tank and secure it with the fastening nut.  Tighten the nut finger tight with an additional quarter turn with the channel locks.
 

7. Re-attach water supply line
 

8. Turn on water
 

9. Adjust water level

Follow the instructions that came with the new fill valve for making the proper adjustment.
 

10. Replace tank lid

If all the above steps on how to replace toilet flush and fill valves are followed, your toilet will be operating like new again.
